I was recommended the clinic and Dr. Ross, by a family member. The whole process from booking to consultation to procedure to results was brilliant.I was looked after, treated in a warm friendly and professional way.Dr.Ross and her assistant were clear in explaining what was going to happen and then talked me through the clinical side of things as the procedure was being completed as well as summarising nicely at the end.I was able to ask questions and clarify anything which was really great as I had some questions ready to ask.Overall a very good, efficient, reassuring and professional experience for a sensitive clinical area.

From the minute you walk into the GUC, you are met with professionalism, politeness and a feeling of calm. Which is exactly what you need when going for a medical appointment/procedure.The centre is lovely, clean and inviting and I was seen promptly. My doctor was Miss Naaila Aslam and I cannot rate her highly enough. I suffer from severe anxiety and she completely put me at ease and explained everything in a completely comprehensive and personable manner throughout my ultrasound. I didn't feel rushed at all and came out of my appointment feeling heard, understood and reassured, which is very unusual for me! Thank you Miss Aslam and the staff at the GUC.

I saw Ms Naaila Aslam at the Gynaecology Ultrasound Centre. I have complex and severe endometriosis so I was attending for an endometriosis mapping ultrasound. The care given at the centre was fantastic. Due to my condition I was in pain throughout the scan but I was constantly reassured by Ms Aslam and her nurse and at multiple points was asked if I wanted her to stop. Ms Aslam talked me and my husband through the scan, explaining what she found and where she was scanning. She diagnosed multiple endometriotic nodules which had been missed on other scans done elsewhere. The report I received after the appointment was thoroughly detailed, with Ms Aslam's recommendation at the end of the report.

I had a really positive experience visiting the gynaecology centre today. The lovely receptionist helped me book a same day appointment (due to a last minute cancellation and asking the consultant to move their lunch break to give me enough time to travel in).Miss Jackie Ross was not only professional but also had a friendly demeanour that immediately put me at ease. She was reassuring and took the time to explain everything and answered all of my questions.Another member of the team was there to check my details and she was really friendly and patient when I couldn’t find my plan number. The report was already available to download before I even got home. I would highly recommend Miss Jackie Ross and the wonderful team!

Easy to access and with a very high standard of treatment and, as expected, an excellent standard of consultant (Naaila Aslam) and her team. Very professional in all aspects. Only one thing. At 5pm precisely, the receptionist left without a word to waiting patients, although practitioners were present. I have attended other HCA facilities and this has not been the case. It meant that if you had a question about your appointment, there was no-one to ask.

This is the best place I have an ultrasound done, and I cant recommend them high enough with words. I have been treated like a queen on every single point of contact, from booking the appointment to the reception and finally Ms Jackie Ross, who performed my ultrasound. From first contact, she put me at ease and made me feel calm, listening to my health concerns and medical history related to the scan we were about to perform, not rushing me at all. During examination, she made sure to, not only, go through each area, where previous scans have spotted something, even if minor, explaining to me how each area of the pelvis was improving or not and, in case of new findings, she made sure to explain in detail what it was, potential causes, the complexity and clinical significance of those new findings, and , most important, her throughout examination, covering all my questions while performing the scan, made me feel, for the first, time, in 7y living in London, that I was being heard, individually. She left no stone unturned regards pelvic and abdominal search for endometriosis, and that was absolutely reassuring. I can tell I've found the perfect gynaecological US centre to carry on my follow ups in the years to come.Thank you so much for the entire team, including assistants and nurses, and special thanks for Jackie, for been such a highly skilled doctor and for showing empathy and understanding to patient's concerns and questions, no matter how minor or significant they might be. This made all difference, and I would recommend this place to every woman, friends of not, who want to be in safe hands regards their reproductive health. Thank you!

Have questions?
Is it possible to diagnose ectopic pregnancy on the scan?
Experienced operators are able to detect almost all ectopic pregnancies measuring more than a few millimetres in size on ultrasound scan. It is important to emphasize; however, that ectopic pregnancies tend to develop more slowly than intrauterine pregnancies and it often takes them longer to grow to the size which makes them visible on the scan. Most women with a positive pregnancy test in whom ultrasound cannot identify a pregnancy have either normal pregnancies which are younger than expected from the date of their last period or they have already suffered a miscarriage. A small proportion of these women; however, may develop small ectopic pregnancies. A blood test is usually arranged in these cases to measure the levels of pregnancy hormones in women’s blood. Based on the result of the blood test we can advise women on the likely outcome of their pregnancy and on the need for further follow up.

When can you see the baby’s heartbeat?
The earliest ultrasound can confirm the presence of a heartbeat is two weeks after a missed menstrual period or four weeks after conception. In women who conceive after IVF the heartbeat can be seen four weeks after the day of oocyte collection. Again, in order to avoid coming for the scan too early it is best to delay the attendance until two and a half to three weeks after the missed period or four and a half to five weeks after conception/oocyte collection.

How soon after a missed period can pregnancy be seen on the scan?
A normal intrauterine pregnancy can be first seen on the scan three days after a missed menstrual period. In women who fall pregnant after fertility treatment such as ovarian stimulation the pregnancy can be seen 17 days after ovulation. In women who conceive after IVF the pregnancy can be seen 17 days after the day of oocyte collection. There are, however, small variations in the timing of conception and women who wish to confirm that their pregnancy is located within the uterus are advised to delay their attendance until a week after the missed period (or three weeks after conception) to avoid coming for the scan too early. This is particularly important in women with uterine abnormalities such as fibroids or adenomyosis, which make it harder to see the pregnancy and sometimes the diagnosis may be delayed for several days.

Is it safe to have a scan in early pregnancy?
There is no evidence that ultrasound scans can harm pregnancies. It is important to ensure, however, that the energy of ultrasound beam is kept low. Use of pulsed Doppler devices to measure blood flow should be avoided in the first weeks of pregnancy as their energy output is higher compared to the ultrasound beam used for standard imaging. Our equipment is fully compliant with the international standards for safe use in pregnancy and the machine energy output is continuously monitored during the examination.

Is it possible to detect ovarian cancer on the scan?
Ovarian cancer can be accurately diagnosed on ultrasound scan. The best and most accurate way to diagnose ovarian cancer is by an expert performing a systematic and detailed examination of the tumour and the adjacent structures in the pelvis and abdominal cavity. The advantage of this approach is that it provides the information about the nature of the tumour instantly in the vast majority of cases, without the need of additional blood tests such as CA125 or MRI.

Can you see Fallopian tubes on the scan?
Normal Fallopian tubes are very thin and they cannot be routinely seen on the scan. If the tubes are damaged, they tend to fill with fluid which makes it possible to see them. Tubal patency can be tested using a procedure called HyCoSy which is described in the section on the services we offer to women with concerns about their fertility.
