Consultants

Mr Davor Jurkovic, MD, FRCOG

Davor Jurkovic was first appointed a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at King’s College Hospital, London in 1997. He is an internationally recognised expert in gynaecological ultrasound and he has published a large number of scientific papers and books in this field. He has helped to develop training programmes in gynaecological ultrasound in the UK and internationally, which have been attended by hundreds of doctors and sonographers. For twenty years he has been running early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound courses in the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He played a major part in developing clinical applications of colour Doppler and three-dimensional ultrasound in gynaecology. He is particularly well known for his work on the diagnosis and treatment of rare and complex forms of ectopic pregnancy, such as Caesarean scar ectopic pregnancies. In 2008 he moved to the University College Hospital, London, where he was appointed a Director of Gynaecology Diagnostic and Outpatient Treatment Unit. The Unit provides a novel model of gynaecological care which integrates ultrasound examination into clinical care with emphasis on one stop clinics, conservative management of many benign gynaecological conditions and better use of outpatient operating facilities.

Ms Sarah Flint, FRCOG

Sarah Flint qualified from Kings College Hospital in 1988. During her training as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist she worked in several units in the South east including Kings College Hospital and St Georges Hospital. She trained in Gynaecology ultrasound at Kings College Hospital under the direction of Davor Jurkovic. Her research interest was transvaginal ultrasound of the cervix in the prediction of preterm delivery. She also trained in Fetal Medicine under the direction of Professor Nicolaides. She was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in 1999 and set up the transvaginal ultrasound service including an Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic at University Hospital Lewisham. She now works as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She leads the Fetal Medicine and Obstetric and Gynaecology ultrasound service at Pembury and Maidstone Hospitals covering over 5000 deliveries. She has worked in The Gynaecology Ultrasound Centre since 1999.

Ms Jackie Ross, FRCOG

Jackie Ross qualified as a doctor in 1992, having studied medicine and genetics at King’s College London. She was awarded prizes in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Surgery as a medical student. After training for three years as a junior doctor she spent two years in research at King’s College Hospital, specialising in early pregnancy problems and Gynaecological Ultrasound. Miss Ross completed her training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology in hospitals throughout the South East of England and entered the specialist register as a Consultant in 2003. She was appointed as a Consultant at King’s College Hospital in 2004 and is currently the clinical lead clinician in the Early Pregnancy and Gynaecology Assessment Unit. Her main areas of interest are in the diagnosis and management of early pregnancy problems, recurrent miscarriage and benign Gynaecology.

Ms Naaila Aslam, MD, MRCOG

Ms Naaila Aslam is a full-time Consultant Gynaecologist at University College London Hospitals. Her main area of expertise is early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound, and minimally invasive surgery.

She regularly manages a wide range of benign gynaecological conditions including menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids. She performs laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery. In addition, she performs out-patient surgical procedures such as hysteroscopy and treatment of miscarriages.

Having graduated from the University of Leeds with a distinction in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1994, she underwent her postgraduate training in London and Bristol. During this time she completed a two year research fellowship in early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound with Mr Davor Jurkovic at King’s College Hospital, London. In addition, she completed a one year clinical fellowship at University College London Hospitals in advanced minimal access surgery. She was subsequently appointed as a Consultant Gynaecologist at UCLH in 2006. More recently she was appointed Clinical Lead for Gynaecology at UCLH between 2008 and 2010.

She was awarded an MD degree from the University of London for her research work on the role of gynaecology ultrasound in the assessment of ovarian tumours. She has published and presented her work on early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound both nationally and internationally.

Mr Joseph Yazbek, MD, MRCOG

Joseph Yazbek is a Consultant Gynaecologist and a Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust.

He completed his postgraduate training in London working in several teaching hospitals including King’s College; Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea. During his training he undertook a two-year research fellowship investigating the role of gynaecological ultrasound in the management of women with ovarian tumours. The principle conclusion drawn from this research is that the quality of an ultrasound examination has a clear positive effect on the management of women with ovarian tumours. He was awarded a research degree (MD) in 2009, going on to complete his general training and subspecialisation in gynaecological oncology surgery at the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre in 2012.

Mr Yazbek’s is highly skilled at performing gynaecology and early pregnancy ultrasound. His main interest is in improving the diagnostic accuracy of ovarian tumours as this has a positive effect on subsequent management. He is also highly skilled in performing open and minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant gynaecological conditions. He has promoted the value of intraoperartive ultrasound for various gynaecological procedures. His expertise in ultrasound, colposcopy and complex gynaecological surgery allows him to provide comprehensive, high quality care to women presenting with a wide range of gynaecological complaints.

Mr Dimitrios Mavrelos, MD, MRCOG

Mr Dimitrios Mavrelos is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and  a Reproductive Medicine Specialist at University College Hospital, London. He studied medicine at the University of Oxford and Guy's King's St Thomas' School of Medicine.  He completed his specialty and subspecialty training in London training with international experts in gynaecological ultrasound, minimal access surgery to improve fertility and in vitro fertilisation.

Currently Mr Mavrelos holds a substantive NHS consultant post in the prestigious Reproductive Medicine Unit at University College London Hospital where he is lead clinician for ultrasound and runs the Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Mavrelos is an honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London and has published innovative scientific articles and book chapters on the diagnosis and management of endometriosis, the diagnosis and management of early pregnancy complications and the impact of gynaecological disorders on fertility.  He lectures nationally and internationally on these subjects and continues leading an active research programme on improving outcomes of IVF cycles.

Mr Tom Holland, MD, MRCOG

Tom Holland is a Consultant Gynaecologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust specialising in early pregnancy and emergency gynaecology, gynaecological ultrasound, minimal access surgery and complex benign gynaecology.

He received preclinical medical training at Cambridge University and clinical training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ qualifying in 2001. He completed his postgraduate training in London working in several teaching hospitals including King’s College; Guy’s and St Thomas’ and University College Hospital. During his training he undertook a two-year research fellowship investigating the role of gynaecological ultrasound in the management of women with endometriosis. The principle conclusion drawn from this research is that ultrasound can be used to assess the severity of endometriosis and guide treatment decisions. He was awarded a research degree (MD) in 2013, going on to complete his general training and advanced laparoscopic surgery training at University College Hospital.

Mr Holland is highly skilled at performing early pregnancy and gynaecology ultrasound. His main interest is the diagnosis of endometriosis by ultrasound and he is regularly invited to lecture on this topic at national and international conferences. He is also highly skilled in performing open and minimally invasive surgery for complex benign gynaecological conditions including endometriosis, fibroids, benign ovarian cysts and a range of other gynaecological conditions.

Mr Joel Naftalin, MBBS, BSc, MD, MRCOG

Mr Joel Naftalin is a full-time Consultant Gynaecologist at University College London Hospitals. His main areas of expertise are early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound, emergency gynaecology and minimally invasive surgery.

He regularly manages women with a wide range of gynaecological symptoms including pelvic pain, heavy or painful periods or irregular bleeding. He is able to diagnose and treat a wide range of benign gynaecological conditions including fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis and ovarian cysts. He performs laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery, as well as open surgery when necessary. He is also able to perform outpatient surgical procedures such as hysteroscopy, treatment of miscarriages and removal of retained coils.

Having graduated from University College London in 2002, he underwent postgraduate training in North East London. During this time he completed a research fellowship in gynaecology ultrasound with Mr Davor Jurkovic. He was subsequently awarded an MD degree from the University of London for his research work on the role of gynaecology ultrasound in the assessment of adenomyosis and endometrial cancer. He has numerous published papers related to his fields of expertise and gives regular lectures on emergency gynaecology, early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound. Having completed his training, he opted to do a two-year clinical fellowship at Homerton University Hospital in advanced minimal access surgery before he was appointed as a Consultant Gynaecologist at UCLH in 2016.

Research & Publications

All our consultants are actively involved in research and they have made significant contributions to the development of ultrasound diagnosis in gynaecology and early pregnancy. They have lectured at numerous scientific meetings and educational courses internationally and in the UK. They have published a large number of scientific papers in international peer reviewed academic journals and chapters in various textbooks. The links to their publications are available above.
